As a business lawyer and a small business advocate, Vennum PLLC is all about making your company successful. We view our clients as family and use all of our corporate law experience and knowledge to defend their rights. After all, you created a small business because you saw possibilities, and we can help pave the way.

Shelly (the nice one)
When you reach out to us, you’ll speak directly to our brilliant office manager, Shelly Moy. Not only is she certified in people skills and genuinely happy to help, but Shelly can get sh*t done like a total boss. If your legal issue isn’t one we handle, we’ll do our best to connect you with an attorney who can help. If, however, you’re fortunate enough to be a small business owner, wanna-be small business owner, entrepreneur, mompreneur, solo freelance calligraphic designer, coffee delivery service*, or person with a business law question, then you’ve come to the right place. Once you’ve passed the stringent but amazingly friendly Shelly vetting process, we’ll get you on the schedule as soon as possible so you can speak with me (Liz Vennum).

Liz (small business + lawyer)
As a small business owner myself, I take pride in helping build and grow local startups and small businesses. Nothing makes me happier than setting up an LLC, drafting an operating agreement, and then watching a company grow from just a couple of documents into a real live business and part of the community.  Our clients are changing the way Charlotte does business– bringing healthy lifestyle brands, exciting educational experiences, expert-level IT consulting, and killer fashion design to the Queen City, and we couldn’t be more proud. Because our small business clients know I’ve got their back, they know they can reach me when it matters most.  Need to talk through a difficult employee termination conversation before the meeting? Happy to help. Want to double-check that, your company’s operating agreement does not actually authorize your business partner to finance a new Bentley on the company dime? I’d lean towards “no,” but it’s still worth pulling up the file, reviewing it, and making sure he’s playing by the rules.  Sometimes running a small business is amazing, and sometimes it’s absolutely terrifying. Whatever it is for you right now, you don’t have to go it alone.

Mac (secret weapon)
Vennum PLLC hit the law clerk lottery this spring when we talked Mac Doughtery into working with us.  Mac is in his third year of Wake Forest’s JD/MBA program, meaning he is basically in the business law equivalent of ninja training.  When two graduate school programs and a demanding law firm job (his boss is the worst) start getting to him, Mac unwinds by playing golf.  He created the Wake Forest School of Law Golf and Racquet Club to promote wellness and to provide students with the opportunity to learn golf and tennis.  Mac says he is thrilled to be a member of the Vennum PLLC team because he gets to help entrepreneurs fulfill their dreams.  Don’t let it go to his head, but we are thrilled to have him.  Mac immerses himself in legal research and meets each new issue with a smile, delivering a well-reasoned brief in the time it would take a normal person to locate the first case.  After graduation in May 2019, Mac will sit for the North Carolina Bar and then clerk with the Honorable Philip Berger, Jr. on the North Carolina Court of Appeals. (I know, right? We are so incredibly proud, but also a little envious that the Court of Appeals made him an offer before we could.)

The Vennum PLLC team provides solid legal experience, down-to-earth business smarts, and scintillating witticisms.  Our clients depend on us to navigate the legal issues they’re facing, and to help avoid legal issues in the future.  Because we focus exclusively on business and employment law, we can identify trends and issues in the law and in industry, and make sure our clients make the most of them.  Whether you’re a brand new entrepreneur or a stressed-out CEO, Vennum PLLC can meet you where you are and help you get where you want to be.
